Short-term Disability initiated by the Company

Can Managment and HR decide that an employee should be placed on Short-term disability without the recommendation of a Doctor?
What course of action should a former employee take if this per se happened to them? It caused a great deal of hardship including loss of 40% of income and upon return on the 2nd day the employee was laid off.
Any suggestions? I'm not certain the HR Director knew that it wasn't medically requested.

Your post sounds like you are the employee who was placed on STD and then let go. These forums are intended for HR managers, not employees.  There are other sites, however, which will better serve your needs. www.freeadvice.com is one of them.

Most of the rights are under the HR and management they can decide these small issues with the employees.
