I personally believe that HR is what you make of it. Depending the hte company's belief and use of HR will depend on it's success. I'm confused, if theCoca-Cola co. felt that HR was a lowly position, then how can they advertise in such a way taht supports some ranges of people. I personally know of Hr Mnaagers who have gone in to companies and taken HR to new levels based on what they have done. Not what the President did, not what management did. But what they did. HR leads itself to HIGH PROFILE. You can't help it. You are infront of every person that is hired into your company. Your first opportunity to make that lasting impression is right then and there. You have every opportunity to keep that going by normal HR functions that require you to relate to people.Legal aspects, benefits, labor relations etc. HR would be last place you would want to put an evil person. By playing their cards right, they could turn an entire organization agaist managment or even themselves. CatBert, the evil HR Director does this well. The same is true for a person who wnats to do right. To motivate and build trust int he organization. HR is a very powerful position and given the right person they can make it very high profile with or without managment behind them especially in a large company.

I am a firm believer that HR must take a stand within an organization and address its needs up front with upper management/administration. I did. I expressed my need for unequivocal support (which I got) and further developed this office from scratch. We have to demonstrate the importance and critical nature of this office. We have to continually educate our administrators and employees about all the legal ramifications if we don't follow the laws. I can assure you the road to success is not without its pitfalls but perserverence does pay off. At least it has for me. I, too, am amazed that such a powerful conglomerate as Coca Cola would deem HR as a "lowly" position. Thanks for the insight. I work for a small nonprofit organization....so whether big or small, the attitudes and problems can be the same. It's up to us in HR to take the bull by the horn and CHARGE!

I do consulting work which often includes HR Managers as my clients. A competent HR Manager, who makes and keeps the right commitments is an invaluable asset to any organization. To be that "asset" a HR Manager must be perceived as a true business partner by his/her colleagues on the senior management team, must be a risk taker, a visionary, a good communicator, able to give tough messages with compassion, must have integrity and be able to say "no" for the right reasons. These are tough skills to have but make "life in HR" more manageable and effective.

Hi,
I must appreciate you for a provocative thinking process. I strongly think every HR Manager should dare to think like this. Unfortunately, every single HR play their role very safe since they are not sure what is the feedback they get from both sides Top management and employees.
Life in HR is being made complicated by the HR Position holders itself. I used to work for a corporate giant which had 14000 employees. Some times i still rememeber some senior managers from different departments used to call HR - A SPIT BOX. All set and done it very rare you command respect.
HR role holders have to wake up and make sure that we command respect and without HR is there is no organisation.

Well said!!!!! Noone ever said that HR was easy, but any battle won is going to be worth any sacrifice made as long as you enjoy doing what you are doing, and if you don't belong in HR, you will know it the first time that bugle blows!

I agree that without HR, a company has little chance of survival, but as an HR professional, I can't agree with regard to demanding respect. Respect is earned with integrity and follow through. To be successful as an HR pro you have to be part psychologist, therapist, advisor, lawyer, cop, judge, and jury. If you can function in these various roles and still maintain your integrity and principles, you will earn all the respect that you need. The time to stand up is not for respect, but for principles, and you have to walk your talk before you stand against an attack!

I have recently moved out of government into a private company. This was the first time they hired an HR professional, as a manufacturing company of 100 employees. It's an upward battle. I'm making progress by taking baby steps and not going in to "change the world". By taking small steps, they are starting to see what difference HR can make, especially when it comes to tying in to strategic goals and union issues.
Don't be too forcefull, but prove your presence. Being the only female situated in a plant floor environment could be very scary, but when people learn that you are a person too (not the police, not a conformist, etc.) it's amazing what you can accomplish.

I've been reading some of thoughts. In my opinion, it is our responsibility to show to the top management that HR's function is not only"expenses" related. Our office is the place where fresh blood will be developed into key positions, where development takes place, where all other head persons got no chance to overcome problems of their subordinate, it is the place where People database, Training database, Medical database, and all other "looks unsignificant" database is stored. But for sure, it is our role to sell the Image : How good we support other departments, How strong we understand the happenings, How fast we respond the cases, and mostly, indealing with Human , it is humble..., it is wise..., it is straight forward, but spread the wisdom.
sometimes it is boring, but we must show : It is our role,... Who change the world. Human is something can not be measured. You are not spending your time with them. We are investing our time.
