I am going to graduate from grad school in May with a Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. MY need for help lies in the fact that I do not know where to start looking for a job. My internship is not a possibility, but I am trying to keep my ears open for an opportunity to network (as I don't know many influential people). How did all of you get started? What did you do to get your job that you love?
I am interested in training and I would really love to work in a consulting firm. My goal is to become a senior consultant, perhaps my own business. Can any of you give some insight?

Dear you,

I started my career 8 yrs ago, from the officer level. Now I am in the senior management team member in one of reputable chained hotel.

I am happy to see person like you wanna jump into training things. In my humble opinion, you must try to be in the operational field first, before you can get the depth of the core business you are with. At least try to apply to well established company who offer sort of management trainee or corporate trainee, whereby you will get the chance to have an exposure in various outlets/department. Then, with this 16-24 months 'familiarisation' you are ready to become consultant/trainer.

Good luck&cheers!

Did you not have an opportunity to work as a co-op student? What about the other students, do they have possible contacts? How about your instructors?

Look for a network. Join associations or clubs related to your field. You need to get out there, and get your name out there. With all of the people you have been involved with, create some connections. Otherwise you're out there looking for a job as anyone who did not receive the education is.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
