HR Debate Topics
Share your stories of workforce-management success in contributing to your business' bottom line, as well as your tales of business bloopers and blunders.
A small forum of HR Managers have scheduled an event of debate on HR issues. Could any one suggest a few topics that would really bring out voices ring out loud.
Thanks in advance

It may not elicit a lot of response depending on your circumstances (especially in a forum with just HR managers), but a discussion of unions and labor relations has the potential to bring a lot of discussion.
I don't know the exact objective of this conference, but other useful topics might include new labor laws, use of HRIS (sharing ideas since many are not used to full potential), outsourcing of HR functions, and the future of HR after September 11th.

I'm betting solving the mysteries of FLMA and ADA compliance will certainly liven up your debate.

This is somewhat philosophical, but do you as an HR manager view employees as inherently good, or bad. If you think they're good, your policies and procedures will be vastly different than if you think they're inherently bad (or irresponsible or unable to have their own common sense.)
Sort of goes into what do you focus on, attendance plans, or work-life balance, focus on bottom up management, or top down management... do the little people get to voice their improvement ideas, or do they get told what the improvements will be.

1) Should HR represent employees? Stockholders? Management? CEO? All?
2) Would it be easier and less expensive to hire people if we got rid of all hiring laws? (E.g. civil rights laws). Would the end result be a better chance for everyone of being hired?
3) Should HR and employers be more involved in desigining education curriculum to better reflect jobs? If so, how?
4) Is HR still a people profession?
5) If HR could do one thing to help our business, regardless of whether it's doing that now, what would it be?
I will hopefully think of more tomorrow, it's getting late. Todd

In our organisation, we have about 200 computers and about 80 of them have access to the www. Its worked very well. The users have drawn the line themselves and we have an extremely disciplined usage of the facility. We have not experienced any spying on internet habits by users at work. But I would'nt generalise, as I have heard from my friends in other organisations that it isn't so easy. They do have strict monitoring and policing on usage at work.
