I am trying to find what the current time off practices are for small (100 employee) companies. Currently our company has:

3 floating holidays
60 hours sick/bereavement time off p

Deang, Go Australia! You forgot to mention we also get Long Service Leave, an additional 2 months paid leave after ten years and it continues to grow. After nearly twenty years with my employer I have accrued 6 months paid leave on full pay or I can take 12 months on half pay! I'm currently on this type of leave while I work on a book.
(and yes, 4 weeks vacation is standard) along with rostered days off (work your standard hours over 19 days and get 20th day off)
Would find it hard to go back to American-style "benefits" although I think many American firms are better at recognising good performance with pay increases.

I am so jealous of everyone's time off policy. I guess I never worked for a company that really gave great time off. My previous employer, where I was laid off also used a PTO policy, where you accrue 17 days a year, 7 paid holidays, and 1 personal. Since I'm young, I don't get sick that often. Thus, after being witht the company for only 3 month, I went to Hawaii for a week. However, the company also promoted teleworking thus I worked 1 day from home, and worked a 980 schedule so I got every other Friday off.
Well, that dream is over. I'm now working for a mid-size manufacturing company (about 2500 employees) and here's their pay time off: 8 paid holidays, 2 weeks vacation after you've been there for 1 year - however, you are not allowed to use any of your vacation until you've been there for 6 month. NO SICK LEAVE!!! NONE!! If you are non-exempt and you are sick, guess what, you don't get paid because you are not allowed to use your vacation time. If you are exempt, they ususally let it go. I hate manufacturing environments - but I actually am enjoying the HR work here, just don't like the environment.

We have about 78 employees and we have PTO. We have 8 paid holidays and accrue 10 hour a month. We have a mandatory end of year shutdown policy. During the this shutdown employees have to use some of there PTO hours(thats a drag). It all depends on how the holidays fall on the calendar, how many PTO hours the employees have to use. Example: last year employees had to use 6 days of PTO and this year employees have to use 2 days of PTO. I need to find out if this is leagal to make employees use there PTO for this MANDATORY Shutdown. Does anyone know.

In establishing PTO/ETO policies, in addition to company size, industry is significant for competitive comparisons. For most employers the major reason to offer time off programs is to be competitive. Competitive within industry or geography are typically most important, and if found to be uncompetitive, could be a major cause of turnonver.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
