Any advice on the following: I am currently in school for my bachelor's in bus. admin and HR. I will complete my degrees by the end of 2003. I have just joined as a student member to SHRM. I am very anxious to move onto a new career within HR and currently where I work they do not hire anyone in HR without a completed degree.
I am a Med Records supervisor, and manage 26 employees over 3 shifts, 7 days a week. I have been in a supervision/leadership role the past 7 yrs. Should I sit tight and get thru my school, or possibly start looking to get myself in a HR job, perhaps recruiting which I do enjoy doing. Lately, my patience is really low. I am really excited about pursuing this new profession. Suggestions would be appreciated.

First and foremost, never leave a job without already having another job lined-up. You also might want to focus a bit more, for instance what do you perceive yourself doing in 5 years. I ask because HR is a very broad field and many people become "Specialists" in a particualar area, such as recruiters, compensation, benefits etc.. or are "Generalists" doing a little of everything. Individuals with HR backgrounds are also used for supervisory positions in manufacturing. Once you know what you want lay-out the steps to get there, just like most everything else, it's a journey so don't get impatient.
Good luck

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
