I just graduated with my MBA in HR and I have been offered the opportunity to create the entire HR function for a non profit organization of about 25 people (and expanding). Does anyone have experience of creating the HR function from scratch in their organiation? Does anyone know of some good resources to help me with this? I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. In the mean time I will pray to the SHRM and Workforce Gods

Congratulations!
You indeed have a challenging task ahead of you.
Maybe the following points might help u:
1. Get to know the purpose of your organisation and how each individual works towards achievement of the stated objective.
2. Get to know the roles of each individual.
3. Get to know the background of each individual (25 is a small no.)
4. Help in aligning individual and organisational objectives (role definition and role clarity). If some one has already done this - go ahead and do it again. You'll learn a lot
5. Take a look at what contributes to performance of an individual. This would help u to set a culture for performance
6. Take a look at systems and policies that exist. If it is more of an ad-hoc arrangement give it a proper shape.
All the best.

what state are you in, and non-profit, is there government grants involved? I have created an HR department for a non-profit of 50-75 employees. I have tons of info. Feel free to e-mail me, I'd be happy to share my thoughts and the lessons of my stumbling blocks.

Hi
I'm a novice too. There are very simple things which go a long way in telling people that they are appreciated. You have a small number. You could try giving every employee a bunch of roses on their birthday. Try involving people in HR activities. Make sure that you inform people if anyone new has joined or anyone is leaving. Ask your employees to refer their friends for filling up positions within the company. Acknowledge any contributions made by them.
Hope this helps
All the best to you

Hi!
When I started at my current company 5 years ago, there was no HR,we had 100+ employees and grew to 150 in less than 6 mos. It was also my first expereince being the HR expert in charge. So,knowing that HR was all new to this company, I purchased a book at the local university called The Complete Do It Yourself Personnel Department by Mary F. Cook/Prentice Hall.
I took goals that had already been discussed prior to my arrival and the book and put together a plan to create and implement a human resources department. Priorities are going to be different at every organization, but that book will make sure that you don't miss anything.
Hopefully this isn't your first HR job. I say that because you are also your best resource. What have you done or seen done before? What worked? What didn't?
I envy you. My first 2 years here I never worked harder or had more fun. I hope you enjoy the experience too!

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
