Hello all HR professionals. I would like to know how I can advance my career. Currently, I'm an HR Specialist assisting anytime around 400 employees. Majority of what I do is administrative, meaning maintaining resume databases, composing/sending offer/termination letters, processing employee status changes such as terminations, salary changes, setting up meetings, do new hire orientation, etc. I report to the HR Generalist who does employee relations, work with the managers and advice them on hiring practicies, review resumes, does the salary workup, and does different training programs for staff & managers. I'm with a big company and there's a seperate AAP, benefit, & compensation group so I don't really understand or work much in those areas. I would like to have the opportunity to get involved in Employee Relations, how to do salary workups, how to read resumes/negotiate with temp agencies on contracts, basically move up to a Generalist position. I like the company that I work for and sometimes enjoy the work that I do, but what's missing is the opportunity to learn and grow professionally. I have asked my supervisor my desire to learn about the different employee relation issues he deals with and wants him to teach me salary workups, etc. Talking is one thing, but actually doing it is another. We both just get so caught up in our own work that there's really no time to develop. Also my supervisor is very independent, and likes to do everything himself. I thought about leaving to work for a smaller company so that I'm responsible for everything, and will have that opportunity to learn, but am afraid of the salary cut that I'm going to get. I have just begin classes for an HR Certificate at a local University and hope that that can advace my career. The advices I have gotten so far is pretty much being at the right place at the right time and meeting someone who's willing to delegate those kind of responsibilites. I guess I just haven't had much luck in the 3 years I've bee involved in HR. If you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't get discouraged; please hang in there because it looks like you have lots to offer. I don't know what your local HR market is like, but the best advice I can give you is to get your degree. It isn't easy when you're working. I had a 70 hour per week military job when I went back to school and only determination carried me through.

Think about the future. An HR Generalist position might satisfy you in the short term, but you will then want an HR Manager job. Please drop an e-mail if you would like some individual advice. It's free; I'm not in business.

I have spent 7 yrs working my way from HR Receptionist to my current Generalist position. Most of those years, I worked for very large companies, pigeon-holed into a "Specialist" position. Being laid off last year was the best thing that could have happend to me.

I am now working for a fairly new company, 150 employees, as the HR Generalist. Before I started here, there wasn't anyone performing in any HR capacity. I have had the good fortune of creating my own department, and my job description. I am learning Benefits, Workers Comp, FMLA, COBRA, and many other Generalist functions as I go. As far as compensation goes, I am earning more now, than I ever would have as a "Specialist" for a big company.

You may just want to put the feelers out there...a small company doesn't always mean small $$.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
