I have to share a blurb from a resume I received today in response to an ad for a laboratory technician. Under education: "I applied to law school last year after I found it difficult to find a true-fighting attorney to assist me in a custody battle for my child. I wasted lots of money on attorneys that didn't even really try in court after they promised they would. I hate lawyers." Too bad for him...our HR Director is a lawyer!

I had a resume blunder yesterday as well. We had an applicant for a front desk position answer several questions in writing; one question was concerning organizational skills and self assessment. The response was that she was a "10 - cause I know everything about computers". Apparently she doesn't know everything about spelling, writing, or grammar.

I guess the new Star Wars movie is having an impact on job applicants.
I received a cover letter with a resume yesterday for a law clerk applicant. He began with, "Like Hans Solo" and then went on to compare some of his traits to those of Hans Solo.
He ended his letter not with the standard, I look forward to, blah, blah, blah -- instead it was "And may the force be with you."
I think he needs to apply for a job on a movie set somewhere.

As an HR Manager, I both love and hate hearing stories like this. I hate it because it makes my job a little tougher but I love it because I could always use a good chuckle. I read a resume yesterday where the candidate was professing to have a "exceptionally strong attention to detail". The problem was that attention was spelled wrong as were several other words in her resume - guess her attention to detail wasn't as strong as she thought.

Wendy 45 -
You'd think, if he wanted to be admired (& hired) for having the same great qualities as his "hero", he would at least get the name right: It's HAN Solo, not Hans (as in Hans Christian Anderson).

I received one where on page one he claimed to have a doctorate and on page two gave the date when he would be completing his associates degree.

I enjoyed the sharing of resume blunders and I have to share one I received the other day. The applicant went to great lengths to explain the duties of her current job as a sales associate at Victoria's Secret. I never thought I would ever see "bras and panties" listed on a resume.

One resume I received a few years ago did not have bras or panties. She did however enclose her Glamour Shots photo where she had on nothing but a feather Boa, (pardon any spelling error)

While I was working as a recruiter, I would occasionally receive resumes from candidates with 40 companies in the To: field.
As soon as I saw this, I automatically declined the candidate without even viewing the resume. In my opinion, if the candidate could not put forth the effort to either email individually or put the name in the bcc: field, he obviously couldn't put forth the effort to do a good job.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
