Because we do and if we do not we should at least sound like we do.

Not knowing what the exact problem is:

HR is generally the only department in a company that does know what is going on within evey other department and should know every company policy on any given subject.

Well, I was asked yesterday if the sinks were broken in the women's restroom! Policy questions I can handle, but come on!

Welcome to HR! If an employee doesn't know where to get an answer, hopefully they will ask you and hopefully you will know. That doesn't mean you need to solve all of their issues, just point them in the right direction. Obviously we don't do toilets, but hopefully we know who is in charge of maintenance so they can talk to them about any concerns. Don't be so sensitive, HR does look after the people after all, but we are a resource. Help them out, after a while you will find these silly requests go away.

Thank you! It's good to know I am not alone in this. I guess HR could be code for the company parent.

Lois: That's nothing - wait until they come and tell you that somebody left something on the sink counter (something that should be unmentionable) and want you to clean it up. It did and I did. Also - have you never had to post the "wash your hands" memo? You have much to look forward to.

Actually HR is usually viewed as the place to go when you have a problem. It's also the only place in the Company most employees can go with a problem and be sure of an ear.
It can be annoying and it can be rewarding, but it's certainly part of the job.

My standard answer to anyone with an unusual issue is "I'll look into it."

Good luck.

Did you happen to mention who the facilities maint point of contact was? Next time they will visit that person. That is why folks go to HR first. Position titles and people resource assets lie there.

Also, HR is usually the department responsible for writing employee handbooks - which should include a section on where to go to get which answers on what subjects (e.g., broken washroom fixtures...maintenance/facilities...phone number). Once a handbook with a section like this is published, all those non-HR questions should decrease somewhat.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
