I received the SPHR certification two years ago and it has basically gone unnoticed. My Sr. Director of HR is not certified, nor is anyone else in the department. One of my peers failed the exam and since then the topic of certification is off limits and not considered a benefit. Now, I am having trouble getting my recertification education requirement paid for by the company. We all attend local SHRM meetings where they emphasize certification, but it is not sinking in. Help!

When the powers that be are not certified or they have good employees who are not certified we should not be surprised that they don't hold certification in high regard.
As professional engineer I was stunned to learn that some people in my state were being registered as professional engineers (PE) eventhough they did not have a degree in engineering and did not take or could not pass the national PE test. My state rep was furious that the engineering board was the only board of registration that waived a written exam.
Some owners and managers of engineering firms did not want all applicants to pass the test because that would mean that some of their long term employees could not get registered. ugh

Sorry to hear that this issue is not just HR industry related. This makes me unsure about recertifying if the value is not going to justify the personal investment. The only reason I can see to keep it is that some other employer may see the value.

IMO we keep ourselves current for our own sake regardless of our employer.

I feel your pain. I was certified PHR in December, 2002. I am the only HR employee certified in my agency.
My immediate supervisor said very little to me. Her boss, the VP, was much more generous with his praise. I too was very disappointed but not surprised. My company is not a learning organization.
Education is extremely important to me. So, I'll find a way to pay the costs.
As my parents have told me, they can take everything BUT your education.
Best of luck to you.

From all the above posts, we all share something in common. But, don't forget, no matter how your current employer may feel (or not feel) about your achievement, there is another employer out there who will appreciate and recognize what you have accomplished.
Don't let this fester and turn you into a negative person. Stay where you are, while taking a look at the other world out there. There truly are companies that exist that would be pleased to take you on for what you have accomplished.
I truly believe that if you have it to offer, there are many who are willing to receive.
Good luck, and keep your confidence up!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!! All of us who have EARNED our certification realize all the hard work that went into it. My certification as well as my Masters Degree also went unnoticed by my employer, but prospective employers are noticing.

Our VP of HR made getting the SPHR part of our goals last year. We studied for months and we all passed. We got a phone call congratulating us but nothing since that time. We, too, are having a hard time with recertification credits; apparently, there is no budget for training for the HR staff. We're on our own and I agree that it's worth the cost (time and $) to maintain. I'm extremely proud of my certification and plan on continuing to certify.

I guess I consider myself lucky. In our organization it is valued. Our VP of HR and our HR Manager have their SPHR and I as the HR Rep/Recruiter have my PHR.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
