Hello I am new to the forum. I am sure this has been discussed before but I am interested in knowing how all of you handle the walking out of employees? Yesterday three people in our technical/engineering staff got let go due to downsizing. The line they worked for had lost money since it's inception into the company. The head of that department walked the one employee right to his car in front of everyone in the cafeteria and it looked humilitating. I guess my question is if the person is not hostile and willing to leave on his own accord why does he have to be escorted to the car like that? People or companies rather, do handle things differently so I would like to know what your thoughts are on this subject?

In a situation where the co determines they want the ee gone right away, there is nothing wrong with escorting them out. I think this even provides added safety for everyone. As long as it is done appropriately, with dignity wherever possible.

However, your supervisor could have done this a little differently. Chosing a different route for example could have allowed the ee to retain some of that dignity.

Care should be taken not to embarrass the ee as that can be seen as hostile.

Maybe this is a good example for HR to bring up for discussion to prepare for the inevitable 'next time'

I agree with the above poster... care should be taken to choose routes which are inconspicuous. Have the escorters carry boxes if applicable, makes it look more like they are helping than escorting.

There is a relatively good reason for some sort of security measures with IT people especially, since many of them can be very capable of shutting your company down if they are savvy enough at their jobs. We're an IT firm, and when we terminate or layoff, we have the restricted access being put in place at the same time the individual is being told they are being let go. So much of what is valuable to us is on our network, we just can't risk it. That being said, I have only had 2 people walked out in 2 years, because they were in fact verging on hostility. All the other layoffs (we went thru a huge downsize over a year ago) were handled without the need for escorts.

Thanks I know that it probably was not IT people in fact I am sure of it. The division of HR did this and it really looked bad. These people parked in the back and the cafeteria is right next to the guard shack door so everyone could see.
