This person started with this company twenty years ago. At the time, the company was small and she was the only woman employed. The other employees are all male. Thus, after a few years working here she became the "office manager". When I was employed here, I was the receptionist. Shortly after (about two months) I was offered another position in the company. This initiated major jealousy with the office manager. For the fourteen years that I have been here she continously makes life miserable for me. I've tried to be friends with her but she can't be trusted with any personal information. I've brought this to the attention of the boss but he says take care of the situation yourself. He doesn't want to get involved. The office manager works for him and they are "friends". When I confronted the office manager with the gossip I heard, she denied that she had said that. I really don't want to quit my job as I have children in college which I help support their expenses. Just need some information on how to handle the situation.

Just a quick reminder - this website and these forums are for employers, not employees.
That said, I don't think there's anything more that you can do about this person. She has a lot more clout than you (she's been there 20 years, she's friends with the boss, and she's a "Manager"). You've spoken to her once, and while that was an appropriate thing for you to do, it didn't get you the results you were hoping to get. Doing anything more (i.e., speaking to her or the boss again about this problem) will probably antagonise her further and get you into even more hot water - maybe even fired! If you have an HR person to go to at your company, you might want to speak to that person and ask him/her to act as an intermediary/referee in some kind of conflict resolution process. If this isn't an option for you, I recommend that you sit tight (given that you don't want to quit outright) and covertly look for another job.

First of all, let me say that I thought that last comment was rude. I don't view "Life in HR" as for 'employers only'. Otherwise I agree with the person, there isn't much more you can do. Just quietly look for another position.
