hello, everyone! I am a student majoring in education technology(related with HR training and peformance technology) with great interest in HR.I see the importance of a right career for one's happiness in the whole life so it would be appreciated very much if you could give me some suggestion before I make the final decision of my career choice.
If time reversed back before the beginning of your HR life and would you choose HR as your career again?
And what characteristics do you think are required for a HR person?
It is said that people who want to take HR as career would better have work experience in other departments, say market or sales dept. so that he or she could handle the HR work better because they understand other employees.Do you think so?
I appreciate your time and kindness for your reply message.Thank you very much!

Yes, knowing what I know about HR now, I would still pick it as a career choice.
Probably one of the most important skills you need in the HR field is listening... you must be able to hear what the employee is telling you. Also, don't respond immediately, because there is always two sides to the story!
Personally, I don't if a background in marketing or sales is beneficial, but I can tell you this, if you enjoy helping people, you will enjoy working in HR.

An HR professional needs to be mature, and mild tempered. You will be dealing with strange and challenging situations everyday and you must be able to appear controlled for the sake of your company and employees. My boss has always told me that the #1 qualification to be in HR is to have COMMON SENSE (You'd be surprised how many people lack this quality)!
A lot of people would compare HR work to that of a parent. You set the example for your children (employees) and enforce the rules (policies), you also get to reward and encourage them.
I have a background in Psychology.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
