I am an HR Manager in Australia writing a book on how (whether) managers align their management practice with their spiritual beleifs.

I am looking for stories from managers in diverse industries with diverse spiritual beliefs to share their stories. I am not looking for the perfect manager. I am looking for stories which demonstrate a desire, an attempt, sometimes a struggle to align practice with beliefs.

It occurred to me that some people would be hesitant to contact the email address as it would reveal the email address of the sender.

If you wish to explore some of your experiences here please do so. For example some managers talk about practices such as meditation, prayer etc that they use in situations such as preparing for a difficult interview with an employee.

Or they believe that people or situations are part of their "life journey" and that they are meant to learn lessons from them.

Some managers express beliefs such as "detachment" from the Buddhist religion or "Let Go and Let God" expressed in 12-step programs.

Please feel free to share your views and experiences. They will inform my thinking as my book starts to take shape. With my thanks, Carol

I have found the "God in everything" concept the most useful - it helps me to deal with moments in a different way, and I like to think of a day as made up of moments like that. Lots of time i'm in a different mode, and then I remeber to come back to the idea. It's very stabilising

Can you give me an exmaple of moments as you go about your work in which you are "aware"? Perhaps you could think back over the last couple of work days and recall?

Do you believe your beliefs influence how you react or approach situations in your work? Perhaps something was happening at work and you viewed it through your belief system and then you responded (or perhaps didn't respond) in a particular way.

For example, a restructure, a re-organisation, a redundancy, a threat or challenge from someone in the organisation?

Someone just reminded me that she finds herself thinking "This, too, shall pass."

It's one that I find myself thinking of as I deal with the small annoyances and frustrations that come with the job.

No, I'm not from Australia!! based in UK.

It's hard to give examples. I guess one would be, when with a person I find difficult, of seeing "behind" them for a moment, to their story, their world. It shifts my approach.

I once worked with a supervisor who was very religious and would quote scripture to illustrate their point of view and in advice to their employees. However this upset an employee who was of a different religious belief. I try to be diplomatic and mindful of other peoples thoughts and feelings on the subject before I verbally reference religion. In my own mind when I am particularly stressed or worried about something I may think about certain phrases or sayings but I try to keep them quiet so I do not offend anyone.

Thank you Jacki, Yes, I find that many of the managers who are talking to me about this subject, choose to talk little about their beliefs but find comfort and strength and often guidance within their beliefs (which by the way are very diverse). They do this is little or no obvious signs to others.

Hello Carol..

More and more individuals are bringing their beliefs and faiths into the workplace. No doubt the way they believe will have an impact in how they act and on the decisions they make.

Some companies are even hiring pastors and ministers to coach and council workers through stressful times.

Personally I have no problem with someone sharing their faith in the workplace (I said sharing not force feeding.. I believe that it gets some creative and innovative thinking moving along. It is interesting to see if those who talk the talk are walking the walk.
