Dear members:

I am a holder of M.Sc in HRD with three years experience working with international firms on project basis. I have migrated to canada. I am having a problem in getting an entry level position in HR field. What I hear is networking is critical and should do in my profession. Research also says that 90% jobs are not been advertised. so here I am to get some assistance in my career search. looking forward for your reply. Thanking all of you in advance.

If you're in Toronto, please note that right now the HR job market here is at the lowest level it's ever been - very few open positions (advertised or not) and 300 - 400 QUALIFIED applicants competing for each of those open positions. Many of the out-of-work HR people that I know here are doing something else while they wait for the market to get better.

If after the bad news above you still want to network with HR folks, and you are in Toronto, I recommend that you join the HRPAO's employment networking group - go to www.hrpao.org to find out how to do this.

Well, when I said Toronto, I meant more like the GTA and even all of Southern Ontario is in a major slump job-wise for HR people.

I think if you're an HR professional who's just emigrated to Canada and want to network with Canadian HR professionals and "Canadianize" your HR skills, you should definitely join the HRPAO. When you apply, let them know you're unemployed, I think they defer some/most/all of the membership fee for unemployed members until they get HR jobs. Good luck!

Hi:
I've consulted for 22 years across N.A. but most of my business is in the GTA.
I currently know of 3 available positions.
Send me your resume and any other info. I would be happy to pass it along if there is a possible fit.
Please note: I'm not a search consultant. I simply like to repay an industry that's been good to me over the years.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
