We currently do not have anything in writing concerning what employee violations receive a verbal warning and which receive written w/o verbal first. We are consistent by making sure each type of violation gets treated the same way.

Two employees were 'caught' in the act of falsifying work time. The supervisor wanted to terminate both employees but it was decided to give them a harsh written warning. The employee that asked a co-worker to falsify his time admitted to it and had no problem with receiving the written warning. The employee that participated in helping the other employee cannot understand why she received a warning! She has no clue that what she did was wrong. She sees it as helping a co-worker out when he was running late. She is now asking WHY a verbal warning was not given to her! I really want to tell her how she should be happy she still has a job!!!!

Have you used the word "theft" when you've tried to explain why what she did was wrong?

No and I should have even though that still would not have opened her eyes! I think she knows what she did was wrong but she refuses to admit to it and is the type to fight anything to the end. She is the type of person that always is right.......

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
