how to do a survey on HRM system of a company?

Dear freinds,
My name is Jafar. I am a Phd student in UK. I am working on the implementation of HRM practices in some selected companies. I am trying to find out which company is using new techniques and which one is using the old personnel management system. I donot know how I can categorise them. For example those which use more than 50% of practices are HRM companies? Can any one help me? Please tell me if there is a similar survey done already. Thank you.
