I've been doing HR for the past 4 years. Mainly still administrative, in a generalist capacity. I just got laid off, but there is another position in the company that I'm being considered for, however it's not HR. It's the safest bet to hold me over during this hard economic times. However, the position is also something new and exciting because I've never done anything else besides HR. To the HR professionals, if I decided to take on this new position (it's mainly financial) but end up not liking it say in 6 mo. to a year, and I want to go back to HR - will I have a hard time?
Please advise.

No you will not have a hard time getting back in HR - HR people looove people who've been in/experienced "elsewhere."
Just make sure you tell your HR bosses (and I mean the bosses, really, the ones who run HR in your company, not just your HR mentors) that you wanna come back to HR, just as soon as the company's doing better, and that the only reason you're leaving your favourite HR department right now is because you're being laid off.
After six months to a year in your new non-HR department, contact HR. If they don't have a job for you right away/real soon, start looking elsewhere. And put that non-HR experience on your resume. Someone'll snap it up!

Wow, I'm surprised by the response! I thought that HR people HATE people who leave HR for sometime and then decide to come back. I thought it shows inconsistancy. If anyone else have any comments, please let me know. I guess I'm somewhat relieved. I hope it goes well for me, since HR is not the best field to be in right now.
Hope I hear from other HR professionals.

I certainly don't believe that HR people hate HR people for leaving the field. My only caution might be that in the field of HR things change very quickly. Just be sure to keep on top of the issues. Best of luck to you.

You do not say exactly what you will be doing now, other than mentioning it has to do with financials. I can tell you from experience that HR is being asked more and more to hone in on the financials of the benefit programs. HR also needs to talk with the accounting department, CFO, and CEO more than ever. Getting a handle on the "lingo" of the accounting side of things will help you to bridge the two sides once you go back to HR. If an HR division does not want to hire you due to your tenure in accounting, then you do not want to work for that company - probably infighting going on between the two departments. Just my two cents! I personally would view the additional experience as an asset.

Daily Q&A
How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?
Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
