I've been working in the area of compensation for a number of years. I would like to make a shift to a generalist role utilizing my compensation background. I've passed both the PHR and SPHR to help myself with gaining a broader knowledge base. Has anyone made this transition from Comp to HR Generalist? What did you do to make this change?

I have not made the change per se...but have gone the opposite of HR generalist to Compensation.

Volunteer to get involved with all other aspects of HR, filling in when a recruiter is out, handling an employee relations issue, explaining the benefits to someone. It doesn't need to be much, but any experience in other aspects you can get should help.

I view the HR profession as an hourglass. Many get their feet wet by doing a bit of everything at first. As the strengths and competencies emerge, HR professionals sometimes, but not always, become focused in specialties like comp, benes, ER, recruiting, training. At the leadership level the generalist breadth must again be there, but from a strategic "why" perspective, rather than the entry level generalist "what" and "how"

So trying to get involved with other aspects by volunteering would be my suggestion. Have you shared this with your VP? Perhaps they can help you redirect your career as well.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
