I am interested in hearing funny or strange excuses that employees have used as the reason for not coming to work. For example, I was told recently that "I was in jail" and another said "my cat deficated (used a differnt word) all over the house and I didn't have any clean clothes to wear". What have you heard from your employees?

Thanks!

I had an employee call in stating that he would not be at work due to the fact that his car broke down and he needed to fix it but, the caller ID showed that he was calling from an internal phone located in shipping. One employee called in saying he had ran over himself with his pick-up truck.

We had someone call in because she was "too drunk to work."

My mother had an employee call in because she (the employee) had an infected navel.

The best one I heard was an employee called in from our parking lot. He said he was going to be late because the door handle on his car just broke off and he was locked inside. He said that he needed to go to a auto mechanic to get it unlocked.

When I suggested to him that he should use the passenger side door to exit the car, there was a few seconds of silence and then he said, "right".

I worked with a lady that once called in well and sick of work. Her manager was so amused that he granted the day off.

One of our employees called in about an hour into his shift to say he would be late because his roommate's girlfriend had stayed the night and he couldn't take a shower.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
