I recently joined a new company and we need to hire a lot of people. About 800 resumes were stored on my laptop and I was going through them like a hot knife through butter.

Things slowed down just a little when I clicked on one applicant's attached resume because it was done in Microsoft Excel.

LOL...that's different! It was attractive and the gridlines made a nice, virtual watermark.

Anybody else seen anything like that? I had to chuckle.

I've seen that done, but not effectively. Was it a financial/accounting position that the person was applying for?

There was this person who had sent her resume in MS Paint format!!!
She said she just count paste her pic in Word (for some reason I fail to understand even after 17 months)...
The resume was in a horrible mess.

(ofcourse we din't hire her...)

I applied for a plant manager position by only submitting an 9 X 11 booklet of a white paper that I did on international management for the SHRM. The first page had a summary of my background. I was one of two candidates out of 100 applicants selected for an interview.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
