wrote a few months ago re: long term employee with cancer. She is still working but misses a lot of work. We are trying to work with her as best we can, but she is making it very difficult due to excessive tardiness and lack of communication. When she is ill, she will sometimes call in and sometimes not; not uncommon for her to miss one to three days entirely without any contact with the office. This behavior pattern was actually a problem before the illness, and one on which she has been counseled on a number of occassions. Of course, we have no written policy for PTO. Anyway, we want to keep her on, but there are two things: 1) we cannot afford to keep paying her full salary for an indeterminate length of time. 2) we feel it sets a bad precedent for the future with other employees. Her illness is quite serious and may go on for months, with an extended absence for surgery also probably on the horizon. We have continued to pay her full salary since this all began two months ago. We are trying to find the best solution for keeping some kind of salary coming to her, while allowing for the fact that this situation may be going on for months yet. My question is: can we keep her at her current salary, but convert her pay to an hourly basis, so that she is paid only for time actually worked? The reason for this is that she has good days and bad days, but they are unpredictable, and when it's a good day, she wants to be at work. We were thinking it might be most equitable to have her punch a timeclock for the duration of this. help!

Do you provide a short or long term disability benefit for your excluded staff?
No doubt you are in an extremely difficult situation here. I'm not sure where you are, but in BC, Canada, we have an employment insurance benefit that also covers sick leave to help people out in this type of scenario.

Failing that, please check with your local legislation to see what your obligations are from the employer's perspective, and how you might help this person out.

Maybe she could work on a part-time basis? Again, without knowing what support is there it might not all be paid time. Not sure what the answer is, but you should do some research to see what options you and the employee have.

Best of luck to you, and the employee as well.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
