Hi,

I have recently secured a green card and am keen to spend some time living and working in USA. I am currently an HR Manager within an Australian arm of a US-Based organisation. We have around 2000 employees that I support with my team of 10 HR Advisors. My role is very generalist with a strong business partnering and operational focus. I have been in HR for around 7 years and have a bachelors degree in business (Majoring in HRM) and will soon complete my Masters degree in Industrial Relations and HRM. I am trying to be realistic about what kind of HR role I could secure in the US. I realise that I would need to take a few steps back to really learn the US employment legislation and market and am more than happy to do that. Can anyone advise me on:

- What kind of role I could realistically secure with my current experience? What kind of salary could I expect?
- Is there any particular guide to HR practices and legislation in USA that could assist me in preparing?
- Is there any particular certification required to work as an HR professional in USA?
- Would I be best to go and work within my current organisation's HR team in USA, and then move on to another HR role having gained some US experience? (Unfortunately my company is not based in the city I would prefer to live in!)

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

For ballpark salary you could go to www.salary.com. Salaries can vary widely by region, so you'd have to have an idea of where you'd be working. You'd have to take the info with a grain of salt, however; I don't know what their data source is.

You may find it helpful to take some sort of overview course - try looking at those offered by SHRM (www.shrm.org) or World at Work (www.worldatwork.org).

Based upon your brief description of your experience I opine you should be able to get a HR Generalist role but People Development / Workforce Management / Succession Planning will provide you with a better chance than Industrial relations.

I would however strongly recommend that you relocate with your existing company as that will allow you to understand the work culture there.

I am in the opposite situation with you because I actually started working in USA in CT than NY before relocating to Melbourne last year.

One thing you need to understand that there is no ONE USA because the East Coast itself is different added to that there is Mid West, West Coast so it has been an interesting experience for me.

For certification I recommend you take up the SHRM and it will provide the necssary training that you require.
