Just curious. I have noticed over the years that typically when employees are counseled as part of a "disciplinary action" they frequently begin to blame HR and say that they are being harassed. . .by HR or the company. Does anyone else encounter this strange phenomenon? How do you as an HR professional respond to this statement? Ask the president of the company to start a full blown investigation over a ludicrous remark. .or just accept that it's a common reaction by an unhappy employee? Some of my other HR colleagues say they'd be rich if they had a dime for every time "HR harassment" was claimed and I agree. But how is one supposed to respond/react???

Yes-I've noticed an increasing trend for employees who are disciplined (or who do not get their own way over an issue) to claim harassment- udsuslly by whomever is the decision maker or news-giver (Hr or the Manager/supervisor). I've found it useful to reinforce the message that the aim of dealing with harrassment is to resolve issues rather than escalate them, and push mediation and other less formal resolutions. This works in a lot, but not all of the cases- but it doesn't stop the trend. I would also like to hear from others who might have had a win in this type of situation.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
