I am currently using the Mathis & Jackson text and study guide, and have found them very useful. I also purchased the PHR/SPHR Cert Study Guide by Bogardus (a red book) that comes with a disc. On the disc are sample tests and some electronic flashcards..... Best advice is to check out the HRCI and/or SHRM sites for their book recommendations. Most of these books can also be purchased on Amazon.com for less $$.

I had an older study guide put out by SHRm but the most helpful for me was the Yahoo study group - They share lots of files and sample tests for study materials. Go online and set up a yahoo ID and go to Yahoo groups and search SHRM and you will find it -
Little late to start studying - I started in August - and did past but was also working and going to college part time which really help because I was in full test taking mode

I purchased the materials plus the previous owner's notes, study schedule and other goodies at ebay. I got a really good price and now we are email buddies.

Its hard to find good training materials for the sphr exam, it was difficult also but I passed. The specific facts you need to know about certain laws and Federal Acts can be tricky.

I used the SHRM Learning System too, but I have noticed that there are now several companies marketing similat products for less $$. I'd ask around about the content before investing in any of these however.

The SPHR Certificate is useless if you have work experience with a recognized HR organization and a Master's from a university with an excellent reputation. Leading corporate HR shops don't take it seriously.

If you're a SHRM member, they have a board especially for those in the process of getting certified. There are often others looking for study groups there.

If you're not a member you might be able to get someone who is to post on your behalf.
Also, some local SHRM chapters have certificaion classes.
