You want to have an event that your employees will attend and enjoy.

Ask the staff for activity suggestions and for their opinions on prior events. Get a small group of staff and/or line managers involved in planning the event and making arrangements. That way you're not doing ALL of the work yourself, and staff will feel more ownership in having a successful event.

Depending on how new you are to this company, you may find the staff involvement particularly helpful because you don't have the historical knowledge of what has been done previously, what has/hasn't worked, and what would be a fit with the company's culture.

We had a great team building / recreation event planed last year. Where we had our employees volunteer to stuff bears for St. Jude hospital. It really make them feel connected with each other and people bond over collective activities. Then we provided simple grill food and held our annual award ceremony. We recognized our top performers by giving them crystal awards provided by Crystal Art USA www.crystalartusa.com. Everyone was pleased with the outcome of the event.

I agree with Sandy, the best events are those that use the gathering as an opportunity to give something back. We usually do a holiday party and adopt a family from one of the local agencies. We spend the evening wrapping and tagging presents. Another time we baked cookies and assembled care packages that we mailed to our troops in Iran.

I've also heard of a company that spends the day at the zoo with their families and special needs kids from the community - that sounds like fun!

Been a year now, I wonder how it went. Deciding on company or employee event is definitely difficult but nowadays, what we do to help us plan for it is that we ask for 2 to 3 representatives from the different departments then we talk it all out. We talk about possible things that employees may enjoy, we talk about the budget, we vote on the things we talk about, we brainstorm on the things to do. Something like that. Although it's been a year I do hope this post can help anyone who does plannings like this on their own.

Daily Q&A

How Do We Keep Our Best During Upheaval?

Things are getting scary for us. We recently had to downsize, and since then have lost some of our best people to other jobs. Aside from boosting their pay (which isn't feasible now), what practical steps can we take to keep them from quitting on us?
