While in person OnBoarding Programs are still in use, many organizations are doing the whole program online or blending the two!  Creating an online learning community gives you so much more leverage.  One of the best features is the videos you can make that will allow the new employee to watch all this new information as many times as they wish.  You can also "introduce' new employees to key employees who are not in their location or can't take the time for this event every time.  The most popular feature of this online approach is you can tape successful employees who can give wonderful advice about what it takes to thrive in the organization. These online learning communities have mobile apps so the program can be accessed anywhere!  Of course this appeals to the Millennials, but also any new employee who loves your innovative approach!

Hi Ashlee

You may want to outling a timeline from offer to 90days onboard and note all the possible the communication points targeting your new hires. Orientation day is just 1 touchpoint amongst many during that time period to help build engagement. Many others have given great insight - here are some points to also think about around communications...

1. Are all communications aligned with your brand in the onboarding process this includes: offer letters, welcome pack or a preonboarding website, materials handed out at orienation, follow up comms from IS for work station set up and manager follow up guidelines. Preonboarding websites are great to house materials new hires to download (forms) or info they like to read before day 1 (benefits especially) plus post videos on what to expect along with FAQs.

2. Consider a quick survey of managers who have hired someone new (what worked; what were their challenges; ideas to improve) and new employees (what was good, missing or challenges in their first 90 days)

3. Think about announcing your program and providing support materials - perhaps managers  and recruiters need a guide on what onboarding covers vs what they must cover; even to the extent of providing talking points and checklists for them to use while onboarding a new hire

4. Consider making your benefits come alive - do you have a fitness or wellness person to come in to break up the session with some movement AND plug your wellness offerings. Or make dry materials fun - can the safety dept do a fun video on safety tips or rules vs a boring 4 page handout or 10 slide ppt...

Hope that helps...

best of luck
Renee

In Response to OnBoarding Program:
I am preparing to kick off an Onboarding project for my company. We currently do the basics, new hire paperwork, orientaiton presentation etc. I am looking to change this up a bit and make it more welcoming and exciting. I have thought about incorporating the "Buddy Program" to make the new employee's feel more welcome and to give them an extra contact to feel comfortable for the 1st 90 days. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas of what could be a great onboarding program? I also want to incorportate the following: Orientation Activities - Ice breakers, fun games during the presentation. 30,60,90 day reviews EE Onboarding Survey Also, I am compiling a list of important policies to cover duing our orientation. Am I missing anything important? Harassment, FMLA, PTO, jury duty/bereavement, holidays, paydays, benefits, timekeeping, overtime, performance reviews, dress code, personal conduct, email and internet usage. Thanks!!!

I have actually sent a welcome package, that included a welcome letter, handbook a coffee mug with our logo, business cards and other HR documents to be completed. Making the first day less hectic.

I almost forgot I include a list of local restaurants, banks, and gas stations
