Save money and hire and pay your contractors/freelancers directly -- you could even pay your contractors/freelancers a bit more than they would have received and you would still save a bundle.  And everyone but Paladin would be much happier.

100% markups for certain skill sets (think IT professionals) is not uncommon.

If this is for a secretary it would be high.

Paladin Staffing does marketing and creative professional placement.  As Howard7 notes above, a bill rate of double the rate a temp/contractor staffing firm pays its employee is not unusual for professionals.  3X for marketing types would, IMO, be excessive.

Are you also taking into account costs that the staffing company might have for Workers Compensation, payroll, payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, state mandated insurance coverage, non-mandated employee benefits such as 401k match and health care?  Plus the inherent costs of having an employee (record retention, performance review, placement costs, "sitting on the bench with no job" wages)? I've seen those be as high as 40-50% of annual wages.  Of course they are going to pass that cost onto their clients. They are a for profit company.

The question should be do you need them to do all of that for you?  Some companies don't have an internal HR or payroll group and would rather outsource.  I do believe outsourcing is good for SOME companies and some positions.  Especially when the employer doesn't want to have to worry about temporary or project-based employees. It can actually be cheaper/easier to deal with an outsourcing firm.  Or those that want someone else to vet the 100s of resumes for one position!

Whether 2 to 3 times is excessive depends on what the companies using the staffing firm are willing to pay and what the market will bear.  There is some security in knowing a staffing firm is ultimately the employer of these individuals (unless a co-employment relationship has been established).  it is nice to be able to call the staffing firm and just tell them you would rather Mr X not return to your place of business on Monday...no reasons needed, no questions asked.

I suspect you are a contractor though and don't think you are getting a large enough slice of the income. You have choices : (1) negotiate with the staffing firm if you can (2) go out on your own and find your own direct clients....bill them directly..pay your own taxes and benefits as a self-employed individual or (3) work for an employer directly....and realize that your pay will probably be less because they are taking on the burden of employee costs/benefits/taxes for you.

My husband has been both a consultant with a third party, an independent contractor and self-employed and an employee of an actual client. There are pros and cons to each.

Only the employer can decide if the cost is worth it.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
