Here are some tips on how to perform a background check for pre-employment screening: 1) Have the applicant sign a disclosure that grants permission to perform a background check before you do anything else. 2) Consider outsourcing a background checking company to perform pre-employment screening services. Not only can this save your company time and expense, but it can also reduce your liability risk. 3) Respect privacy and discrimination laws. You may not request medical records of an applicant or refuse to hire based on a disability. Likewise, while bankruptcies are a matter of public record, you may not use this information to form a hiring decision. 4) Confirm academic credentials. Nearly 40 percent of resumes contain enhancements, including claims of educational pursuits. 5) Check the related laws about requesting and using information regarding criminal history. |
