I'm not seeing any replies to this, and I am quite interested in what HR Professionals would have to say about it.

I myself am considering going to University of Phoenix to complete my degree, and while in my town I would actually be IN classes rather than on-line, I'm concerned about the image my degree would present. After reviewing their program, I anticipate a lot of hard work, (and I already work very hard 9-5) and it's expensive. I believe the education itself would be very credible, but would the degree be respectable?

I completed an Executive MBA program and I can't image how hard it would be to do it on-line. Much of the learning is done in the classroom and in study groups with other students. Managers need to learn how to work with others face-to-face more so than in an on-line environment. Just a quick thought for you.

I do primarily executive and management recruiting. Univ of Phoenix degrees (as well as those from Keller, a Devry MBA program) rarely make it past my desk to a hiring manager. In my opinion, a Phoenix or Devry program isn't worth either the expense or the effort.

Is it better than not having an MBA? Probably. But in comparison to more traditional MBA's, I'll go with the traditional degree holder rather than the Phoenix one.

I agree with Nork3 that the program has to be closely looked at for national accredidation etc. I do disagree to a point with Bob's comment. I have my MBA, traditional and currently working on a second Masters in procurement and contract mgt on-line with U. of Maryland. F2f is great no doubt, but many of these on-line programs do require that interface via chat, conf calls, e-mail and group projects using these mediums. The reason I believe this is viable is in my daily pursuits, the majority of my coordination is with managers located in other regions of the US or overseas as well as many of our suppliers are overseas. F2F would be nice but too expensive so we conduct business using electronic means. I think as long as the school is known nationally for their programs, on-line is viable. It certainly is much harder and more time consuming than my F2F classes. U of P from what I heard isn't an actual state supported or non-profit institution, but rather a for profit training center.

I certainly consider the traditional approach to be most appealing to people but with the use of ICT, a qualification from reputable organisations is also good.
When one compares the cost of classroom education to that of Vitual learning, then definitely the latter looks appealing. This is more so in countries where enrollment rates outstrip the available resources.
I'm in this business of virtual learning and I find the quality of the two types of learning to be insignificant.I will not hesitate to give equal opportunity to candidates from virtual and the traditional classroom in employment.

I currently am a HR Recruiter for a government agency. I have a Masters degree in Organizational Management which I obtained through the On-line program at University of Phoenix. On-line education is becoming the new wave thing. It is highly encouraged to our employees who just can't make it to the classroom. There are people who have families and other responsibilities that prevent them from going back to school to pursue a degree. There is nothing wrong with obtaining degree through an on-line program. In my opinion, it is much much harder then going to an actual classroom setting. I worked really hard day and night to get my degree. I honestly can say I learned more on-line than in classroom style when I did my undergrad.

I don't disagree with the comments above regarding online or distance learning. It's certainly appropriate for people who don't live near a university.

I do, however, suggest that you look closely at the institution offering it. Several fully accredited universities offer distance programs such as Colorado State University, Indiana University and others. However, University of Phoenix is expensive, it's a "for profit" business enterprise rather than a traditional university, it's not fully accredited and most experienced recruiters will discount it in favor of more traditional degrees.

I dont agree with Nork3..First of all it all depends on the college and the major that one chooses...For example majors like nursing, teaching, and some other professions should be taken in classrooms...On the other hand there are some majors that can be taken online....And besides for a person that just starts out college has to take general classes that colleges call core classes....And sometimes those core classes that we take dont necessarily relate to our jobs in the future....I think its a wonderful opportunity for many people to offer online degree in certain fields like management/marketing/ecoconomics majors....They are people who have family responsibilities and other obligations that prevent them from having a degree that will promote them better jobs....And also when hiring one for a job...one must look at a whole package...his communication skills, abilities, and other capabilities...And there are some cases where students go to CUNY schools and dont learn those skills because of certain barries..where students are too arrogant or busy to socialize...speaking from a personal experience..In addition technology is expanding and in next decade getting online degree would be perfect option for many people considering their busy lives...

I value the feedback I'm getting from all of you. I hope my saying "thank you" now won't discourage others from posting. (So, Thank you!)

When U of P is "courting" you, they are careful not to mention that they are not fully accredited. Their aggressive recruiting did put me off a bit and certainly made them look more like a for-profit venture. However, I like the fact that their instructors are local professionals in the field of study(as I said, in my town they are local and I would actually be IN a classroom setting), and that was why I was giving them a second look.

Thanks again to all for your candid comments, and I shall check back for any additional remarks.

Regards,
Detta

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
