Good afternoon everyone! I have begun to partner with my company president on a Sr Director of Communications recruit.

I have been asked to pull together 6 interview questions to probe the following areas:
- Ability to manage difficult senior executives, yet not undermine
- Ability to work with a small team and limited resources
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Writing abilities (we are reviewing portfolio, but would like to discuss in the interview)

Can you make any suggestions as to great questions to pull out this information? Any other fantastic interview questions that I should incorporate?

Thank you for all of your help!
Karen

There are 5 questions that should be asked of all applicants. Some of them may sound strange to you but they will get to the core of an applicant.
1. Tell me about the very first job or thing you did to earn money?
2. What is the number one achievements in your career are you most proud of.
3. How would your rate yourself on a scale of 0-10 as a (fill in the blank)
4. Did you have a performance review or evaluation?
5. What are the key questions or concerns you have about going to work for our organization?

If you would like to know what you are looking for or more on why these are the most important questions send me an email at

It is difficult to give a list of questions that would fit all situations. However, I find the statements that have been posed to be good questions in themselves and it is up to the panel members to listen carefully for any consistency or lack of it in the way the candidate handles his/her answer.

The candidate should be asked to respond by demonstrating how they have achieved or not in similar circumstances and the lessons learnt.

Give an example of a time you had to work with someone you just didn't like very much.

Tell me about a time you were able to successfully persuade someone to do something you knew he or she was reluctant to do.

Tell me about the most difficult manager you've had to work with. Why was he/she difficult? What did they do, say? How did you feel about that? What did you do to work with him/her?

Tell me about a project or event you had to organize and walk me through it step by step from the beginning. What did you do first? Next...

Tell me about your most challenging writing assignment. Why was it difficult? What did you do?

Tell me about the job you've had where you had to do the most writing -- what kind, what did you do to research and prepare, how quickly were you able to turn around written materials, what kind of feedback did you get on your writing.

What grades did you get in your English classes in college/high school?

What did you do in your last job to contribute to a teamwork environment? Be specific.

Describe your most recent group effort.

Tell me about a time when you had a disagreement with someone on your team.

Describe a situation in which you were able to positively influence the actions of others in a specific direction.

Give an example of a time you had to deal with a customer or co-worker who was upset or irate. What happened first? What did they do, say? What did you do, say? How did you feel about the situation? What was the final outcome?

Give an example of a time when you had a team member who was not pulling his or her weight. What was the situation? At what point did you first realize there was a problem? What did you do, say? How did you feel about the situation? What was the final outcome?

As a senior communicator, I think it's important to point out that communication involves a wide range of skills that go beyond writing, so a review of writing samples could be misleading. I would want to know if the person is adept at analyzing audiences (conducting research), facilitating the development of aligned key messages, developing (or overseeing the development of) media of all types, and, most importantly, measuring the results of communication efforts and demonstrating ROI.

The BEST types of questions to ask are behaviorally based and structured. Therefore, create questions that ask "Tell me about a time when...or...How did you deal with the siuation when..." As you are aware the best predictor of future performance is past performance. In addition, when you ask a question, for example, "Tell me the grade you received in Language Arts 101," what does the information tell you? If the person responds, "I got an A" how you can be sure if they are telling the truth, also what type of program did they graduate from? Was it a top ten school, if not, how representative is a grade from 10 years ago?

I do technical interviews so I may not understand the specifics of the executive interview, but here is what I find puzzling about the suggestions posted here.

Why not simply ask the questions that you really want answered?
For instance: "Tell me how you handle relationships with difficult senior executives".
Trying instead to derive that information by asking about his first summer job sounds like voodoo to me.
