The most important thing that I would like to see in fresh grads (and ANY other prospective employee for that matter) is the ability to get the job done. Many people are dangerously casual about deadlines and meeting all specifications of the work -- we can tell them that something absolutely needs to be done by Friday and they will tell us on Friday that its not done yet, or we'll tell them to do things a certain way and get something completely different. While this can be managed, it is a hassle to do so, and I'd rather spend my time on other, more income-generating endeavors.

Knowledge of our company & what the job is
Experience - not necessarily direct, but applicable
The ability of the candidate to make connections from their courses/experiences to our work environment
Professionalism, including attire, language
I've been surprisingly disappointed in the interviewing skills (or lack of)of recent college grads.
Verbal and written communication - again, I continue to be surprised by the inability to spell, put together a logical sentence, and speak effectively. This includes completing an application form without citing "see resume."

I also speak to college seniors to help them prepare for interviews. I tell them to offer specific skills/internships/experiences that will be relavant to the company that they are interviewing with. They need to have researched the organization and should know something about it. To the extent that there is a job description for the position that they are interviewing for; they need to know what the skills and qualifications are the company is looking for and be able to articulate in a demonstrated way how they have those skills. They need to show what value they will add along with what they are looking for. I do look at what accomplishments they have had in college or high school but I also look at whether or not they held a job to help pay or defray some of the costs of college. I am very interested in the person who is prepared for this interview with this company. I have them role play interviews for jobs that I give them during the class and see who can best relate their experiences to what I am looking for.

With respect to the question: I agree with all of the posts. The candidate must be prepared for the interview, present themselves appropriately, have a solid background (GPA, volunteer and intern experience are part of this for someone with little professional experience.) All of this was effective for me when I interviewed for my first job out of college and the criteria continues to serve me well as the main recruiter at my company.
