I am an executive coach working both sides of this issue working with companies developing successful hiring practices and individual executives making career transitions. As has been suggested earlier validity in your use and setting is key however it is also important to have a provider that will give you service to analyze and regularly reevaluate the effectiveness of the tool. The most common mistake I see is that companies continue using a tool but do not fully mine the data that has been accumulated. Feel free to visit http://www.profilesinternational.com/web00017.aspx

The very best in pre-employment assessments are developed by Profiles International. They have documented results showing how any HR department can be a "profit center" as opposed to a "cost center".

For H.S. / GED level non-exempts, we use the RAI Arithmetic Index (54 questions) and the RAI Reading Index (60 questions). They should be available from vangent-hcm.com and/or pearsonreidlondonhouse.com The two brands are related in some manner.

The important thing to remember is to make the assessment job related. For instance, if the job doesnt highly depend on math, you may be focusing on the wrong things and miss other critical factors important to the role. I would suggest benchmarking the job to identify the critical success factors and then assess the job and applicants to measure job fit. As a recruiting manager, my clients and I have experienced much success with assessments from Target Training International (http://www.ttidisc.com). Their solutions measure a wide range of areas, including behaviors, motivators, task preference, and mastery levels and capacities for personal skills. I would be happy to provide sample material or talk further with you, or anyone who is interested.

Its a pity that there isn't a website called postingintelligence.com You might learn something about why you don't want to spam advertise on sites like these; specifically, that we won't use the services of anyone who posts ads here.

Recruitaroo is good. But they test skills specific to a job function (so they might test HTML for programmers, etc.), rather than general skills.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
