Hi,

I am not a HR person or recruiter. I am on the other side of the fence, per se.

I have been looking for a position for over 2 months now and I am pretty frustrated.

I am not a dumbo, by any means. I have a BA degree, am studying for CFA, have over 8 years of solid experience...just as an FYI.

This is my rant.

By making the initial phase of your recruitment through online only, you are all making a huge mistake.

I understand the volumes of resumes you get are enormous, but that is YOUR job!!!! Your job is to review and hire people. How can you let a computer filter for you? Computers are dumb machines(trust me, I program them) and any dumb person can put in the keywords to pass your super-hero filters.

I don't get it. Can you explain to me why you would trust a computer not to throw out someone that could be a great asset for your company because they didn't put the "buzz" words?

Also, where is the communications back to us that we are not selected? Just waiting for your response is painful, especially in this economy. We are human beings, with family and feelings. Not knowing what is going on takes it toll on us and the families we support. I understand that we have to move on and search, but it brings a closure to us when we know what is going on.

Please, please, let us know what is going on and why we were not selected. Don't be quite and think we will understand.

Obviously I am upset and it comes through here. I just hope that you can bring some human-ness in this whole issue.

In fact, come to think about it, I am going to start a website for other employees to list all companies that frustrate them in the hiring process. Let the world see what type of HR departments are being run in the Fortune 500 companies. I hope that would change this practice of online application and being deleted by machines.

I work 10 to 12 hours per day, six and sometimes seven days per week. I maintain telephone contact with all of the candidates that I interview, whether the news is good or bad, and in as timely a fashion as possible. I also provide a small amount of career counselling to those candidates who are not selected for hire by my company's hiring managers. Given this, combined with everything else I have to do (employee relations, policy development, training, compensation plan design and management, legal research, etc.), I simply do not have time to respond (verbally or via email) to the hundreds of candidates who respond to my job ads - AND I apologize in advance for this in those same job ads!

And, given everything else I have to do, I don't think my boss would agree with you that it's somehow my job to be communicating individually with job applicants. And it's my boss who tells me what to do, not you.

Most of us have been where you are Anand, some of us several times in our career. We know the frustration well, but as hrbth indicated, its unrealistic to expect personal feedback unless youre in the final cut. Even then, many companies wont respond back to unsuccessful applicants.

Screening is not always done electronically. As you point out, anyone can add key words to their resume based on what they read in the job posting and stand a chance of getting in the maybe stack. Based on the job description and the direction of the hiring manager we screen for the skill set, background and other criteria specified. The other point to remember is that its a competitive process, you may be well qualified for a posted position, but so may 30 other applicants.

What can you do?
Make finding a position a full time job. Persistence pays off, but it may be a long haul, so hang in there. Make sure your resume is well written and speaks to the job requirements (have several people critique it) .
Practice you personal elevator speech (30 sec pitch).
Practice interview skills with others.
Network, network, network.
Do you best to stay up and positive. This is the toughest part, but absolutely critical to you success.

Hang in there and dont hesitate to ask for help. Most of the folks on this board will be happy to do so.
Good Hunting

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
