A question recently came up in a college placement office conference about whether or not it was a good idea for college placement office professionals to take a posting from a commercial or corporate website job board and repost on an inhouse college job board if that job were, of course, appropriate for new grads or interns.

My own private sector recruiting experience would incline me towards a "sure, go ahead...I want more resumes regardless of where they come from". Just want to check with the readers of this forum to see how extensively this feeling may be shared and certainly to get any feedback on why this practice may be good or bad.

Thanks in advance!

No, just list the sites. Positions are posted and closed so often that getting a resume from someone after the position is filled is not desirable.

As a third party recruiter, I say yes. The more candidates the better and if the position is closed, that's okay because I will have another similar position to talk about.

I might contact the employer directly first about the college's career placement office, and the services they could provide, including posting the position at no charge. As a recruiter with a private company, I would want to have the heads up about the resumes before they arrive, and might want to ensure that the recent grads have the experience I am looking for.

This is also a great way to build a relationship between the placement office and the employer for future job opportunities, career fairs, and student development activities.

As an employer, we are not always happy when 3rd parties re-post our jobs without our permission. They do not usually respect the "closing date", so the applicant ends up with a dead link. Additionally, we've had some questionable organizations re-post our jobs, which does not help our corporate image/branding efforts. So I would like to be contacted first before our jobs are re-posted.

Linking is fine, but I concur with Katn, would prefer the college contact me directly so I can send them a posting. If the posting the placement office saw is a couple months old already, the position may have been filled.

Thanks. I've been taking postings from corporate websites to make sure they're current (I would hope they are!) but perhaps haven't been as diligent on making sure they're taking down within a reasonable timeframe.

Thanks for the inputs!

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
