Rule #1: do not get into a debate with the person being fired. If it's for cause, then tell the person the reason (assuming its a legal reason) but don't go any further than that.

Be prepared to tell the person what she or he will get in a final paycheck, accrued vacation, COBRA.

What Nork said.

After arranging for a witness (if needed), and closing the door, I open the conversation with the termination.

I then fill in the reason and go over what is happening next, such as final check, cleaning out the desk, etc. If enough notice was given, I have the final check ready and will have the supervisor escort them to their desk and on out the door (or Security if warranted).

If the discipline has been done correctly, the termination will not be a surprise.

thank you for the great advise! To answer someone's question, it is for poor performance, and I do have documentation. It is a nice person, but in the end, not the right person for the job.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
