I am a recruiter in the Long Island, NY area. I am looking for inexpensive ways to find new talent. We do not have a monster, careerbuilder or internet account and in the past have spent enormous money on print advertising and the use of agencies. My main focus is finding RN's who are looking to take their career in another direction out of patient care. I have gone to Nursing Schools and posted with no luck because we are looking for experienced nurses. I am looking for creative ideas to present to management going forward. We are currently in a hiring freeze like many other companies but I want to be ready to hit the ground running when the freeze is lifted. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried any of the social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc? I'm sure you can find RN groups on any of those (I particularly like LInkedIn simply because it's got a more professional focus).
Dont waste your time with the big job boards - there are probably many smaller niche jog sites that are much cheaper and much more focused on what you're looking for. Do a google search for them.
Also try association job boards. I'm sure there are membership organizations for RN's out there - many of these host free job boards and have resumes of members available.
Join the groups, get the names, start tracking people down and calling. If you're not going to be spending money on advertising, you'll have to be more aggressive in your own efforts.

First of all let me congratulate you on thinking out of the box. As you have realized the sources you have traditionally been using are very expensive and return little bang for your buck.
Back in my healthcare days with a large multi-state provider organization we often times relied on direct mail campaigns. We simply bought mailing lists from the various state agencies and then with the partnership of our marketing people (they had thin skins and while the HR team was more than able to write the appropriate correspondence it was simply easier to let them participate)we did mass mailouts. Our return, meaning interested people, was usually in the 25% - 30% range. We hired most of our experienced RN's this way. As I am certain you are aware many RN's are unhappy in a clinical environment with off hours, rotating shifts and the myriad of other issues prevalent in direct patient care. If you are offering a less stressful environment with competitive wages and "regular" hours you should emphasize that in your mailer. I am confident you will reap the response you seek.

We had success using facebook. We were looking a Safety Manager for more than 3 months. Finaly we found some good candidates on facebook. We are close to hire one of these candidates.
Facebook is a easy and cheap way to find good candidates.

Have you tried hosting a Continuing Education Event, its a great way to introduce your organization in a "none sales way" Agree with other posts regarding using social media sites especially LinkedIn. Using widgets your positions can be posted directly on those sites. If you would like to brainstorm some more please call me at 609-660-7726. I have been in recruiting since the 80's and used a variety of techniques to attract RN's.

I used to work in healthcare and I agree, continuing education events for RNs and similar get great turnouts.

Good for you! Having a proactive plan ready to present to your management team is a great start! In addition to the other ideas already mentioned, here's a few thoughts...one of the first things I would do is identify a preferred profile. You already know what you need, but what are the key characteristics & attributes that make them successful? Do you already have successful people in place in this role? What was their career path? Ask them for ideas - maybe they can even help you recruit through networking or testimonials about why they like working there, why they made the switch, etc. Check into school alumni associations, as well as local professional organizations for the nursing profession - host an open house with CEU's and keynote speakers - tie into some of the key initiatives in your area. And yes, LinkedIn is a good place to post - look for LinkedIn groups that might already have the professionals you're looking for. Good luck!

You might want to try partnering with a firm that specializes in market research and candidate sourcing. For example, Head2Head. Our fees are generally 75% less than what you would pay an agency - for a lot more & richer data, as well as a better candidate and HM experience, not to mention better recruitment marketing. Feel free to conact me for further information. I work as H2H's Outsourcing Practice Lead.

Let me add another idea. You may want to partner with your local newspaper. They probably have a very robust marketing department, or at the very least more robust than the average employer in most communities. They can help you target certain demographics quite well. I did this as a part of a hospital branding effort I was leading particularly designed to target RN recruiting (my less than adept marketing department was a bit upset about that but they couldn't deliver). My results were beyond amazing and it could not have been accomplished without that partnership. Perhaps you could have similar results.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
