SSN requirement on online application

Does anybody have an opinion about providing a SSN in an online application? If the application states that it is required, are non compliant apps thrown out? Do you think this information is better left for a hard copy when the applicant is met in person? There are a lot of horror stories out there in web land of stolen information containing this type of information. How should this be handled? Both sides of the argument should be considered.

Hi:
I wouldn't request SSNs until you [the employer] have a legitimate use for such information. Also, employers need to be aware of state-based privacy legislation (e.g., California, Massachusetts) that mandates certain protections for personal information of this nature.
