We run 24 hours in manufacturing and use a temp agency to staff for our busy season. We have some days where absences require us to order temps to come in ASAP to keep production going. On the 1st and 2nd shifts, this is no problem for our temp agency to deliver. On 3rd shift which is from 11:00pm to 7:30am our agency is almost never able to contact temps and have them come in ASAP.
Does anyone else have temp staffing needs at night like this and if so how do you meet these needs? I am not sure it is realistic to think any agency could deliver temps at that time of night. Are we kidding ourselves or do we just need a better temp agency?
(BTW we are in a well populated metro area where there are dozens of temp agencies and plenty of 24 hour businesses)

I really think you should ask the temp agencies about whether or not they could meet your 3rd shift needs. I suspect that in a down economy like this one that you should be able to staff a 3rd shift fairly easily.

Thanks Nork,
Staffing 3rd shift with a few hours notice has been fine. It is the emergency needs that are not working out for us.
The agency SAYS they can provide temps at 11:00pm with no advance notice, but on the occasions when we needed it they have not been able to call anybody in.
I am of the opinion that of course there will be difficulty calling people after 11:00pm to ask them to start work NOW. Even if they pick up the phone, will they be able to work until 7:30 without falling asleep?
I just don't think this is realistic, but my operations team insists that this is the way to do it (and then complain when the agency can't deliver).
Anyone with a success story on how they dealt with midnight staffing needs? Examples or just opinions are requested.
Thanks (c:

Even if your agency had built a list of on-call personnel for 3rd shift; it would be hard to deliver on ASAP orders. Have you asked the agency to show you their plan to address this situation? Depending on your frequency & headcount I would consider offering a paid on-call program that can deploy if needed. In other words, pay a few people a 2 hour minimum to be on call for 3rd shift. You would have to determine the cost compared to the impact the talent shortage has on production. I donât know what your product is but might consider a swing shift (during busy season) so that if 3rd no shows you can use coverage without stalling production. Just a few ideas. Good luck.
