Where I previously worked, we would give candidates a folder with printed out company information and benefit information. Our company website wasn't that informative, so we would print these packets out and provide to every candidate we interviewed. It would include the application and EEO statement, etc.

Now at my new employer our website is very informative and detailed as to what our company does and other company/employee information. We do not print anything out for the candidates we interview (other than application, etc.) nor do we have a folder.

My question is what has become the norm, with the access to the internet/websites is it obsolete to provide a candidate with this much information, printed? What information do you provide your candidates who interview with you?

Our company website has all the relevant information so candidates know mos tof it when they apply. And once they are hired they are given links to all our benefits enrollment, 401k, direct deposit, etc. No more printed materials. Often they're out of date when they come back from the printers. This way changes can be made very quickly cheap and green. I think the only thing we print anymore is a one-page announcement at open enrollment with the high-level changes that we mail to employee homes. Seriously, printed matter is going, going gone.

If a position requires internet literacy, we direct them to the Web site. If not, we offer them an option. We do print much less and that's a blessing since things sometimes change faster than you can order new literature.

Electronic info is the norm for any and/or all the reasons noted above. New hire packages - forms, etc - are also becoming more and more done electronically.

Frankly, I'm disappointed in candidates who haven't been to the website.

Everything they need is there.

We do print our benefits brochure (exactly what is on the web) because it's a nice tool for the recruiter to use when discussing benefits.

Quite a few of our staff are income challenged and do not have ready access to the internet. That forces us to have a paper alternative for those staff.

I agree that paper is going the way of the dinosaur. I always ask applicants what they know about us and where they got their information.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
