What is your opinion of verifing high school/GED as well as college degree completion if it is listed on the applicants resume or application if they are being considered for employment? What method do you use for verifying?

I'm not sure I'd waste any time verifying a high school diploma/GED unless you're complying with a regulation that requires it.

I would definitely verify college degrees, however. All you have to do is call the registrar's office at the college for which you usually need a SSN.

The huge growth in unaccredited degree programs makes it very worthwhile to check out the university/college that the degree comes from as well. If its an institution I've never heard of, I google it and check to see that it's accredited by one of the 6 regional accrediting organizations first (or by an appropriate accrediting organization for graduate degrees if applicable). If it's not, I don't bother verifying the degree and go on to the next candidate. If it is, then I call the registrar's office to verify.

If it is an entry level position requiring that level of education then it might be checked. In our pre-employment screening business out of Hong Kong we have done some of this on rare occasions but more importantly we verify past employment and check references.

If you are in the USA it is not as simple as calling the Registrar. My firm is a member of the National Student Clearing House which for us is a fast efficient service. In other parts of the world the procedures involve going to the University. India has unique problems with slow responses so it would never be good to go it without a third party provider.

I have never had a problem calling a registrar's office to get a degree verification. Some universities have gone to a third party verification service, but those are still the exception.

If you are an employer, and the degree verification is rather necessary to the position you provided, you'd better ask for help from a third party, such as a professional backgroud check agency

I disagree.  It's easy to do yourself.  A professional background check agency is unnecessary for just degree verification.  An agency can save time, especially if degree verification is included as part of an overall background check, but making the call to an agency to get a degree verification takes as much time as just calling the registrar's office yourself.

And if you use a third party, more laws/rights come into play as to what you have to provide the applicant before and after a background check than if you do it internally.  I am not sure there is actually less risk using a 3rd party.  Yes, they hve access to more information and we do use a 3rd party occassionally, but not for all new hires.

I have run into having to use the National Clearinghouse for some of the universities. But then again I've had some business that use a 3rd party and then charge the prospectuve employer to get even the most basic of information.

I know universities and former employers get nothing out of providing a reference, but we try to do so quickly for free when asked.

I don't usually check high school education, but I always verify college degrees through the National Student Clearinghouse website (http://www.studentclearinghouse.org/secure_area/DVEV/dvev_bridge.asp). It is a very easy process and the charges do not seem unreasonable.  I have contacted the Registrar's office, but I sometimes run into the situation where I need to have the candidate's written permission.

Would having them attach a copy of the degree or transcripts to their application work just as well?

^well, you'd still verify it of course. I have seriously went to a lot of places where they make fake copies of a lot of things. Fake certifications, fake transcripts, fake student grade card - I seriously know this one student who have not gone to school for one whole year but still wears his uniform each day, leave for school each day and present the parents with fake certificates and grades... he would go on playing those online games instead...
