I believe they do work, but I would work with a qualified I/O psychologist to ensure the testing and subsequent decision making process is done correctly and fairly.
For example, there may be issues with using a test designed for retail in a different setting, or using a test that hasn't been normed for a protected group. Or not being qualified to administer the test, all of these things can be viewed as questionable practices.
But consulting with a professional is expensive so you wouldn't want to use it to "weed out" candidates.

Hi:
Well developed integrity tests are very useful at predicting various forms of counterproductivity (e.g., theft, turnover, wasting time), and have been consistently shown not to exhibit disparate impact on the basis of applicants' race or gender. A reputable provider of such tests will have both industrial-organizational psychologists and employment attorneys that can assist you with the various issues (e.g., reliability, validity) that must be addressed before adopting any hiring tool.
With respect to the above post, which seems to imply that you can't use such tests to weed out candidates, the majority of companies that utilize integrity tests apply them early in the hiring process to screen out candidates. Through such an approach, these organizations minimize the costs and time spent on less competitive candidates. From a legal perspective, this is not at all problematic if the employer is using a test that has been appropriately validated.
I trust these thoughts are helpful.

Dr. Arnold,
Thanks for your feedback. Are there any reputable providers who you would particularly recommend?

Hi:
There are some good integrity assessment vendors in the marketplace. I am partial to Wonderlic. They provide a Behavior Risk Profile that successfully reduces turnover, accidents, employee theft, absenteeism, tardiness and client complaints. In fact, they have targeted job profiles and case studies demonstrating ROI specifically for the property management industry. As Dr. Arnold suggested, you will want to identify a reputable provider with valid, reliable and legal instruments. Company and staff expertise is important too.

Hi:
Since I'm Wonderlic's General Counsel, I certainly can't disagree w/ the above recommnedation. As an aside, the Association of Test Publishers could provide the names of some additional publishers who provide such tests as well.
Hope this is helpful.

Daily Q&A
How to Address Flagging Motivation?
How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
