Yep, Social Media recruiting is a buzz-word for some executives, mainly because they see it as no-cost I suspect. I have used Linked-In locate candidates with specific skill sets or in specific companies.

Once I read that a local company was having a RIF, so I searched LinkedIn for people in the company who had skill sets I could use.

It's not just the latest buzz-word, it's one of the most effective new recruiting tools around. In addition to job posting functions, it's also great for:

* employer branding
* creating candidate pipelines
* online job fairs
* sourcing passive candidates

And of course, it's free!

We somehwat skeptically started using social media for recruiting almost a year ago and now that's almost the only way we recruit. It's been a great and very rewarding experience.

In addition, keep in mind that most/all of your competitors are probably already doing this. Even though I'm not looking for a new job myself, I get calls every week from recruiters mining LinkedIn for candidates. This tells me that what we're doing is pretty commonplace.

Our corporate office has a Facebook page that we all (branch offices included) use regularly and with some measure of success. It is used as a recruitment tool as well as PR for our company-we offer tips on different topics, from keeping cool while working in the heat to how temporary staffing works. The majority of our business in this economy has turned to industrial/manufacturing work, so even if our prospective employees aren't on Facebook, someone who knows someone who is looking is and passes the word on from there.

We use the Careerbuilder Work@ app and it has been fantastic! It's a great way to ease the referral process for employees has helped us find qualified candidates through our existing employee base.

I have presented several times to area HR Professionals on the benefits and use of Social Media and now have a presentation set for job seekers. A great read on the importance and how to get started is Jeffrey Gitomer's Social Boom. Tell your leadership team if they are not doing it, your competition is.

I encourage you to read posts from Lee Aase, particularly his 35 Social Media Theses (http://social-media-university-global.org/35-social-media-theses/). He also has a link on his page on the topic of Facebook for Business. Lee works for the Mayo Clinic as director of its Center for Social Media.

Here is a great article from the NYT about some of the concerns regarding recruiting via social media: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/21/technology/social-media-history-becomes-a-new-job-hurdle.html?_r=4

I have written a number of blog posts that address the use of social media in recruiting. Here are links to two in particular that might be useful:
