My company is considering a PFP system for our hourlies in the distribution center. Their tasks are repetitive (unloading, putting product away, selecting product from the racks, staging product, loading it on the trucks) in that material flows through the distribution about as quickly as it enters. I have a few questions - and no, I'm not in HR, I'm an Industrial Engineer. My wife IS in HR and has definite feelings on it, but would prefer not to let them influence how I assist my employer.

A) Yea or nay on the PFP? Why? What literature is available (online or hardcopy) to support your view?

B) What methods is your company using to collect the data for time standards, regardless of whether or not you are using the PFP system?

C) What incentives are you incorporating into your PFP system? ESOP? 401k contribution? Added hourly wages?

You can email me directly at dwittma@mclaneco.com to get your message to me quicker. I appreciate the help!

PFP actually shapes our workplace performance, behavior and attitude toward organization and coworkers. I've seen PFP work very well when it is administered with a great deal of detail, openness, and accuracy. However, I've seen PFP fail horrendously when its fairness is doubted. Keep in mind that we live in a very competitive and class conscious society. We make very deep-rooted judgements about people and organizations based on our assumptions of a persons worth and status. PFP even in the smallest increments creates a have verse have not situation among coworkers.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
