My class has been discussing motivation-ie how to motivate the new generation of workers, and what to do with employees who think they deserve a reward for work done when they are only performing to average, at best.

There are various resources out there for any manager to read.
With all of the changes in EEO, and some of the recent decisions by the supreme court regarding the ADA, a good reference point would be a subscription to any HR or Recruiting discussion groups email service. These discussions are usually up to date and cover a lot of information.
There are so many books out there reagrding different schools of thought on HR issues, it's hard to point you in any one direction. If you could be more specific about your focus. Do you want information on Benefits, Hiring & Firing, Compensation plans, Industry trends, or Employee training programs?
If you're interested in reading books to help you as an overall manager. I have had the opportunity to read a lot of great books to help in the daily dealings with everyone you may come into contact with.
Here are a few:
Dancing with porcupines - Phillips
The on-purpose person - McCarthy
How to win friends & influence people- Carnegie
Lions don't need to roar - Benton
Any Stephen Covey book
Any Og Mandino book
Hope this helps if only as a starting point.

I've found Lyle M. Spencer to be a very accurate visionary of what is possible with an HRIS. He also has published 'Competence at Work' which is a useful reference when considering how competencies can be modelled in an HRIS.
