Mentoring Software
Discuss how to choose system that will yield the best results, as well as how to maintain it, and how to calculate its return on investment.
Does anyone know of a good mentoring software vendor? We are looking for something simple that will help match our participants. I should mention we are a public University so price will be a factor.

Hi Tammy,
I've got my Robin Williams hat on that says "OH DOPEY ME". Can you please explain mentoring software? I've not hear of this before.
Thanks
FT

We are considering launching a campus wide mentoring program in which employees can receive mentoring from one another. We are seeking software that would help match/pair mentors.

It sounds like a good concept. I'm not aware of anything out of the box that would do this. Your idea sounds like a need for a skills matching type of software. I picture it having a defined set of skills/competencies and values for strengths and weaknesses. The software would need to sort by similarities and/or disparities to match people.

Rather than installing Mentoring Software it may be better to consider installing a bulletin board/ forum on your internal web pages (intranet).

You could get mentors (and maybe mentees) to place their personal profiles. This way the programme may become more self selecting.

One company that I visited had found that a general employee bulltin board acted as a good channel for employee communication and allowed their employees to share the problems that they had been facing. The bulletin board will need to be moderated or policed though to keep negative feedback away

Thanks! This is a great idea, however, we do not have an intranet. I'm wondering, though, if our IT dept. may have something that could potentially work.

Thanks again, Tammy

We are preparing a professional article about all the organizations that provide software solutions for establising and maintaining mentoring programs. We've identified about six so far. If you anyone on this list knows of others or would like to view the article when completed, please feel free to email me directly at rcarr@mentors.ca

When making important decisions like these, it is very important to know "the better questions to ask". What your organizations and you are investing is a lot of time, responsibility and effort plus money. It's usually about the careers of other people so that counts for a lot.
To the untrained eye, different software might appear to match partners "pretty well the same" but there actually are huge differences in what users will be charged for and how well the matches will be made. So the experiences will vary greatly even the the cost might be quite comparable.
If any one wants a copy of "Ask Better Questions to Make Great Decisions", I will be happy to email a copy. While I admit I represent a web-based application software for mentoring (or knowledge transfer or skill coaching), readers have said it was very helpful and a real eye-opener.
