We are currently using Oracle for our HRIS and our organization structure duplicates our financial chart of accounts. We have divisions and cost centers. Our security department is looking at improving their identity management business processes and expressed a need to have a further breakdown of employees to the teams/functions in cost centers. For example our Technology Infrastructure cost center, may include these teams/functions: Network & Telecom, Desktop Services, Database Administration, etc. They are requesting this further organizational breakdown begin in the HRIS. Of course this would be a huge system change. HR has no business need to know this further breakdown of employees. I am not sure what our strategy should be and I would like to hear comments from others. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Having been through thie with many systems, there are usually ways to identify a more specific breakdown in your org structure. Are job titles or positions at a more granular level so they might be used?

Most identity mamagement solutions rely on some sort of "role" to assign security properly and I suspect that's what they're getting at. It is possible to then map jobs to roles and thereby create the access type. Using your example, the employee is in EIT but their job title is Telecomm Specialist and therefore is assigned role A; all employees in role A have access to systems 1,2,3 or Buildings X, Y, Z. Another EIT employee is a Systems Analyst and their role is B, allowing them access to 4, 5, 6. See if that works for them.
