Hi Trudy:

My firm People Notion, http://www.peoplenotion.com specializes in Leadership Development programs. I promise this is not a sales pitch.

If you would like to give me a call (888.799.4369) and tell me a little more about the reasons why you are trying to start a LD program, I would be able to give you some strong advice.

Many upper management teams tend to initially be on the defensive, because you are more or less saying that they could be much stronger. The key is to turn that rationale into a positive play on the organization AND on their own career development.

You'll need true justification as well in terms of financial, productivity, time, and service figures. This isn't as hard to do as you may initially think.

As I said, if you would like to give me a call, I'd be more than happy to speak with you.

Kind regards,
Michael Blackstone

people seem to gravitate to benchmarks - both internal and external. i sense it would be great to poll the people to see who they percieve as great leaders in the organization. also poll those people to see who they percieve as great leaders outside the organization.

once you've got these data points, you can develop an out-of-the-ballfield leadership development program.

i'll be happy to chat if you like - best of luck with your initiative - sounds like you can make an impact and have some fun!

Hi Trudy,

I'm a great fan of leadership development. I also completed a major business study and financial analysis of your corporation two months ago as an academic project so I'm somewhat familiar with your business environment and culture.

What level(s) of management are the prospective candidates? Is this a one-time shot or will it be recurring? Cost? What business problem are you trying to fix or is this an effort at qualitative improvement? Have you attempted to calculate any return on investment? If this isn't possible, consider focusing on trends or problem areas where management needs solutions. If the training is recurring or long-term, make sure it's fluid and dynamic. Periodically, review your training materials to ensure you are focusing on today's important issues, not yesterday's.

Best of luck. BTW, my research convinced me that your corporation would be a great place to work--they treat people well and offer great benefits.

Can we develop leaders or provide leaders with development programs?

The authors of the book "First break all the rules, what the world's greatest managers do differently" make a convincing case that talent is what separates the best from the rest and talent cannot be imparted after the hire. Talent must be hired.

I'm going to differ with Bob on this one and it concerns a contemporary, philosophical leadership issue. My belief is that leaders can be developed; I don't think all leaders are born that way. Ideally, from a corporate standpoint, it is advantageous to hire the most talented individuals, but this comes at a cost and it depends on factors such as the supply and demand of labor and workers' current skill sets.

While I agree that raw talent is a trait necessary for successful leadership, I think some type of training enhances that talent. Isn't that one of the purposes of education?

/>My belief is that leaders can be developed; I don't think all leaders are born that way.<

I agree, but they develop that way over the 18 to 60 years before they are hired as employees. IMO it is unlikely that training will undo what had been done during those 18 to 60 years.

/>Ideally, from a corporate standpoint, it is advantageous to hire the most talented individuals<

What do you mean by "most talented"? How do we measure talent? We know that the most knowledgable, the most educated, the most experienced, the highest IQ are seldom the best people to hire.

/>...While I agree that raw talent is a trait necessary for successful leadership, I think some type of training enhances that talent.<

I agree 100% but we must start with the raw talent. Everyone doesn't have the raw talent to become a leader. Nature wouldn't be so cruel as to make us all leaders or to aspire to be in leaders.

/>Isn't that one of the purposes of education?<

Education is about instilling new knowledge. Leadership is about behaving as a leader all the time under all conditions which explains why so few of us make good leaders; we cannot behave as a leader under all conditions.

Hi Trudy,

There are several good articles on leadership in the archives at http://www.expertmagazine.com, offering different perspectives on the subject. Maybe some of the information will be useful to you.

It may be inappropriate to have a staff person alone build a case for leadership Development. What is more useful and effective is to have an executive sponsor who not onlly helps build the case, but can be a representative on the executive group who helps drive the process.
I have never seen a situation where bottoms upLeadership Development has been successful.
It is a key organizational commitment form the top, and fundamentally needs involvement and support by Senior leaders.

Leasdership development is a topic that can be quoted or reviewed in retrospect but I believe that the most difficult skill that new leaders have to understand is "how to understand". I don't have any better way to describe it than to pass you on to a website of a personal leader from my past. Check it out. www.grassrootsleadership.com Mike discussed leadership and it applies to every organization across the board.

Daily Q&A

How to Address Flagging Motivation?

How do I increase motivation levels in the department? How do I brand my business unit as an attractive place to work? I have top-notch IT professionals in my business unit who feel they are "children of a lesser God" because they are non-billable resources and do not get plum postings abroad, nor the glamour that goes with them. As a result, their motivation suffers.
