My past experience includes developing a leadership program for an organization that wanted to deepen its bench strength and create a retention tool for their high potential employees. It was an exclusive program that required participant application and acceptance and required a major time committment over a two year period of time.

Currently, I am working with a company that wants to expose its employees to the benefits of strong leadership skills inside and outside of work and to utilize the program as a retention tool.

In both of these cases the programs were supported by an Executive within the organization and we utilized outside talent to help us create and develop our vision.

My recommendation would be to contact a professional who can help you talk through the reasons for developing the program and help you put together a presentation to management that will help sell them on the idea.

I would recommend Greg Holder, President of Holder & Associates. He can be reached at (701)451-0140 or e-mail: holderassociates@aol.com

Our organisation is currently ramping up a focus on Leadership Development. We have seen too many examples in the recent past where we have thrown managers & supervisors 'in the deep end'. The talented ones survive, however many have not survived the short journey. To grow your organisation effectively, you need the majority of staff with people responsibilities to be continuously developing their leadership skills, and they can be developed. We are going back to basics on this one, and focusing on the behavioural competencies required of our leaders. To this end, we are looking towards skilling the 'interim' levels, by targeting our future supervisors & managers long before an actual opening exists at the next level, & working with them to focus on development plans & mentor/coaching opportunities. In this way, we hope to have people ready to step up when the opportunities arise.

Have you raed "First break all the rules what the world's greatest managers do differently?" The authors make a convincing case that we must hire talent since talent cannot be imparted later by training, coaching or education.

If you send me an email with "First break all the rules" as the subject I'll send you my review of the book.

In Response to Leadership Development:
Hi Trudy, There are several good articles on leadership in the archives at http://www.expertmagazine.com , offering different perspectives on the subject. Maybe some of the information will be useful to you. Best regards, Janet Delph

Janet,
Thank you for this link.  I am starting the daunting task of researching best companies, best vendors and best practices in leadership development to present to our leadership in hopes that they will continue support for a leadership development program.

Trudy,
See http://tlcyouthservices.net/Leadership.html for some practical approaches to leadership development.

I use interactive training, that is fun, yet thought provoking. If you have some concepts that need illustrations, just contact me. I'll be glad to offer some ideas (for free!).

Vesse/carlile/ceotalk:

You may note that the posts you're responding to are nearly 11 years old.  I would hope that Trudy has long since found sources of information on this topic.

Cheers!
